Geo-Everything Team,

The Geo-Everything team presentation was very interesting. I have always been a fan of Google Earth and use it as part of my Educational Technology. I especially like the flying feature. It enables me to gather three dimensional, GPS based information of the mountain forest areas where my brother and I spend a great deal of time tracking animals and communicating with nature. We use it to assess potential places of interest, route selection, and navigate while in these undeveloped areas. It has enabled me to navigate in the mountains, in the dark, with reasonable accuracy.

One of the weaknesses of GPS is that in the mountains you don’t always get a clear line of site to the sky. So you have to cross reference it with a compass. Another weakness is that the United States has not funded the replacement of this aging satellite network. Soon these satellites will start deteriorating and re-entering the atmosphere to be destroyed. What will we use is replacement? I personally think that they’ll get them replaced on time, when the system starts to significantly affect how we navigate and conduct warfare.

One of the more fascinating aspects of your presentation was Jay’s paper demonstration that generated three dimensional imagery in an interactive and powerful way. My mind immediately started going crazy with the potential uses and possibilities. It was the proverbial light clicking on!

Question to you “What did you learn?”

Great Work!
